Writing the Whirlwind

“Human intelligence and creativity rise out of the very nature of the universe, which is itself intelligent and creative”
–Elizabeth A. Johnson, Women, Earth, and Creator Spirit

“Stories come out of the Earth. When all the Earth is covered up, where will our stories come from?”
–Maxine Hong Kingston

One of the tragedies of modern life is that we have become severed from the natural world. And since we are part of that world, this means that we have become severed from ourselves.

We are born of the Earth and live only by exchanging substances and energy with other beings and with nonliving matter. But many facets of modern life have blinded us to this reality of our natural selves. The philosophical conviction that the mind and body are separate—with mind being the important part. An economic system that has turned the Earth and her inhabitants into commodities. Religious traditions insisting that only humans have souls. A notion that humans are the only beings that truly matter.

Writing the Whirlwind believes that writing can heal our relationship with the Earth, renew our connection with the natural world, and remind us of who we really are.
